History Keith Dempster opened The Mill Restaurant in 1962 as a coffee house/restaurant/folk music venue. It became the center of an Americana music community in Iowa City that achieved national and international fame. The Mill also became known for great pizza and sandwiches. Recent History In June, 2003 Keith and Pam, closed The Mill. The Mill was important to many people in Iowa City; where local landmarks have been replaced with cookie-cutter buildings and chain restaurants. On July 19, 2003 The Mill reopened, and we’ll keep it going as long as possible. The Goal To continue to keep The Mill a special place in Iowa City. To be home for local musicians and other creative artists. To bring great artists from outside Iowa to our intimate venue. To be a place where excellent people serve excellent food and drinks at a fair price.

The Mill is stoked to announce indie rock group Bad Bad Hats live on Thursday, April 25 at 8 pm! Their 2015 debut album 'Psychic Reader' caught the attention of outlets including The New Yorker, NPR, Pitchfork, and Paste. Since the release of 'Psychic Reader', Bad Bad Hats has toured the U.S. extensively, supporting artists including Margaret Glaspy, Hippo Campus, and Third Eye Blind. We're just one week away from the return of indie dream-folk band, Great Lake Swimmers! Folk duo Native Harrow will open the evening. 2018 marked the 15th anniversary of Great Lake Swimmers. Over seven albums, multiple EPs, live broadcasts, and reissues, the Toronto-based project led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker has established itself as a beloved indie folk act in their native Canada and beyond. The CBC has called them “a national treasure,” while their music has taken them around the world, sharing a sound that is at once familiar and distinct, using the tools of folk music as the starting point to delve deeper. Jason doesn’t get out to perform as much as he used to or as much as he’d like, so come out and see him and Sad Iron Music perform songs from Jason’s catalog as well as a selection of some favorite alt-country and Americana covers. Christopher Gold is a Kentucky-born songwriter living in Wisconsin. Together with his band The New Old Things he has written and recorded folk songs, country songs, rock & roll songs, and everything in between citing a love for songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and anybody else whose work begins with paper and pen. 8 p.m. show go, doors open at 7 p.m. $10 at the door.

Coming next Friday, February 1, Shane Mauss returns to The Mill with Shane Mauss: Stand Up Science, where local scientists and comedians join Shane to bring you an unforgettable two hour show that is equal parts ahas and hahas! He'll be joined by comedian and host of the Underground Comedy Open Mic in DSM, Dan Umthun. Stand Up Science will blow your mind and bust your gut, but don’t worry… there is a doctorate in the house. Bringing the science will be postdoctoral research scholar Kayly Lembke, who uses fruit flies to study synapse structure and function in order to understand how defects in these contribute to neurodegenerative and cognitive diseases, and postdoctoral research scholar Nicole Green, who uses fruit flies to understand how tissues develop.
